Meze Audio Liric | Dekoni Audio Replacement Earpad Measurements

Meze Audio’s latest Liric headphone has been a wonderful addition to the collection of high-quality planar magnetic, closed-back headphones available to audiophiles around the world. These headphones not only offer excellent sound reproduction, but they are also portable, making on-the-go listening super easy.

These headphones are everything an audiophile needs to enjoy their music. But with the addition of our new Elite Sheepskin earpads, you can enjoy the Meze Audio Liric with maximum comfortability and an upgraded listening experience. While our replacement earpads offer newfound comfort, they can tweak the sound signature of the headphones ever so slightly.

When we design our earpads we take into consideration how they may affect the sound. We always try to maintain, if not, improve the original sound of the headphones as much as we can. We do this by conducting multiple frequency response tests and making the proper revisions, if necessary before we finalize the product.

With that being said, let’s see how our new Elite Sheepskin earpads compare to the Meze Audio Liric stock earpads after recording the measurements.

Our Elite Sheepskin earpads are made with authentic sheepskin leather and come packed with high-density memory foam. The additional, highly dense memory foam creates a tighter seal around your ears, allowing for more isolation.

If you take a look at the above graph, you can see that with authentic sheepskin and high-density memory foam, the earpads reduce the amplitude of the low ends at around 10-100 Hz. This means you can expect a slight reduction in bass content. This minor decrease in the bass is due to not utilizing the airflow system found in the original stock earpads. The dismissal of the flow system in our earpads, however, will bring out the brighter tones of the headphones.

In the midrange, we recorded an increase in presence at around 200-500 Hz. You may notice that the deeper vocals, strings, and other instruments that fall in this range will have a stronger presence.

We recorded some reductions in the high-frequency range, specifically at the 5 kHz range. The slight decrease in the 5kHz range will reduce ear fatigue from the attack of percussive instruments. Typically these will cut through the mix and make you flinch when it’s too loud. This can potentially help mellow out some of that unwanted sound.

After testing out variations of our other Elite earpad materials including our velour, fenestrated sheepskin, and hybrid, we recognized that the solid, authentic sheepskin material offered the best possible sound signature, on top of its added boost in comfort.

Another thing to take into consideration regarding our earpad measurements is the uniqueness of everyone’s ears. Depending on the way your ears are shaped, there may be some slight alterations in the frequency response compared to the measurements we recorded with our dummy. At the end of the day, your opinion will depend on your personal preference, which was what we strive to give to our customers — more options and the opportunity to pursue the sound they want.
