Dekoni Gel Series:
How Does It Work?

Heat Capacity

Every material has what’s called a heat capacity – a unit of measurement that describes how much energy needs to be added to that material for it’s temperature to increase by 1 degree. When it comes to earpads, they absorb heat from your skin/head, and it will take some amount of time for the foam inside of the pad to reach the same temperature as your skin. But water has one of the highest heat capacities – in other words,if you could add a layer of water between the foam and velour, then the pad would take much longer to heat up. As water is a liquid at normal temperatures, gel is the next best solution as it can contain a high concentration of water while still being a solid. Because of this, the gel pad takes longer to warm up when compared to a regular pad because it has an additional material that’s able to soak up a lot of heat energy before actually increasing in temperature.

Thermal Conductivity

There’s also thermal conductivity – some users claim that the gel pads feel colder than regular pads even if both pads were at the same starting temperature. The gel layer has a higher thermal conductivity than our foam, which makes it capable of quickly pulling the heat away from your skin and absorbing it into the gel – this rapid loss of heat on your skin is generally perceived as touching a cold surface, even if the surface isn’t any colder than anything else you’re in contact with. Another example would be a cold room with a wooden door that has a metal handle – the doors wooden surface may feel slightly cool to the touch, but grabbing the handle could feel ice cold as it’s able to quickly sap the heat out of your hand and fingers.

What We Use

The materials used in the pad are very similar to our traditional Dekoni Elite and Choice earpads. We decided to use the same high density memory foam for it’s slow rebound, while using a fabric face on the pad to help speed up the transfer of heat from your skin to the pad. The outer face of the pad uses our Platinum Leather to maximize isolation from outside noise, while the inner face uses the same leather with pores to improve the sound quality.

Available Styles

The Gel Series earpads are available in two styles – a round style and an oval style. For compatbility, please refer to our compatibility charts below – note that we may support models that aren’t listed here as we may not have the headphone available to confirm fit.
