Shure’s Aonic 50 is a high-quality headphone with an array of great features — such as noise cancellation, wireless and bluetooth capabilities, fast-charging, USB-C listening, and easy-to-remove earpads. These popular headphones have found success in the massive commuter, work-from-home, and audiophile market. Due to its large appeal, we wanted to see if there was any way we could add the Dekoni touch to these great headphones. After reviewing the headphones ourselves and analyzing feedback from Aonic 50 users, we realized there was still some room for improvement— specifically in the overall comfort of the earpads. Some of the improvements we made to the earpads include adjusting the dimensions to create more room for the user’s ears, increasing the depth of the earpad, and adding in our high-density memory foam and Choice Series materials to improve the overall clamp, isolation, and comfort. The earpads we have available for the Shure Aonic 50 headphones are our Choice Leather and Choice Suede replacement earpads. In this post, we will discuss the frequency response measurements of our Choice Leather and Suede replacement earpads and how they compare to the stock earpads of the Shure Aonic 50 headphones.
Our Choice Leather replacement earpads feature soft, supple synthetic leather. Though, its sleek look and incredibly gentle feel on the skin are constantly mistaken for real leather. These earpads use the same high-density, ultra-slow rebound memory foam from the Elite series. The foam allows for a more relaxed and sealed clamp around the ears, which ultimately will improve isolation and comfortability. Now, moving on to the measurements shown in the graph, you can notice this material boosts some of the inaudible 10Hz range by 5dB. Headphones usually can’t reproduce extremely low frequencies very well due to small driver sizes. At this frequency, you likely won't hear the difference, however, you may be able to feel it. You can also see a shift in the upper low frequencies where there is a smoother bass response compared to the stock earpads. This allows transients to be less noticeable, such as kick drums or an 808 kick. We’ve noticed that this makes it a bit less punchy and more engulfing. The mid-range is slightly boosted by a few dB, allowing for a minor increase in vocal presence. In the higher mid-range, we see a drop of a few dB in some places. You may notice less emphasis on the harmonics. You may also lose a small amount of air and clarity, though the dips aren’t too significant and may not translate audibly for most people.

Up next are our Choice Suede replacement earpads. These earpads and their soft, velvety feel lend themselves closer to the stock earpads when compared to the Choice Leather earpads. In the above graph, you will again notice the boost in the lower frequency content, which might not be noticeable. However, there are audible low frequencies that have been boosted and will increase the warmth of your sound. The low mids have been decreased to around 3 dB, meaning instruments such as the bass guitar will be a little recessed. You may also lose a little bit of brilliance in the high frequencies due to the slight dip, though, in most places it would be inaudible at only about 1dB.

There you have it, a closer look at how our Choice Series earpads can affect the overall sound of your Shure Aonic 50 headphones. In the above graph, you can see a comparison of both our Choice Series earpads and the stock earpads, side-by-side. You can visibly see some changes in the sound signature compared to the stock earpads. Though, with the alterations of our Choice earpads, such as the change in dimensions, foam, and outer materials, designed to greatly enhance comfort, you will most likely not perceive any major adjustments to the sound signature. Hopefully, we were able to give you a better understanding of our Choice Series earpads and how they match up with the Shure Aonic 50 headphones.
