I listen to music and watch videos a lot, whether listening to music at work, or at home playing some video games and watching youtube. What separates these two activities, is that one is done through a speaker and another is done with headphones. Why not listen to music and watch video with speakers everywhere or wear headphones all day, it is because of location. As much as I would love to play my speakers loud at home, which I like to do sometimes. I like wearing headphones at home because it is less likely to disturb the other people in my house, and I use speakers at work because I am at work and I like to be able to hear my surroundings in case someone needs my attention. I would worry about disturbing people at my job with my loud music, but there is no one else in my section of the warehouse.
At home, I am mostly in my room in a Discord, playing a game, or watching some good videos on Youtube. I like to keep all the sound private, no one else in my house wants to know what song I am listening to or what video game I am playing. I also do most of my gaming on the weekdays in the middle of night, where distractions are less likely to occur. Late night makes for the best gaming times, even if I should be asleep can’t really pass up a great gaming opportunity. So the use of my headphones allow me to game in the middle of the night without waking anyone else up in the house because of game sounds.
At work, it is a whole nother setting and location, also I need to move around a lot. Grabbing boxes down from shelves, pulling orders, and responding to messages on my computer. All those movements would be restricted with headphones, I know I could go wireless but again I “really” do not like sweating into my ear pads and them getting progressively moist throughout the day. I tend to move around a lot during the work day going from one section of the warehouse to the other, also involved with that is the climbing of ladders and rolling ladders which are just moveable stairs. Lots of carrying boxes and items, so in general just a lot of movement. Well you could also tell me to use earbuds, but then I like to be able to hear my soundings.
In most warehouses you want to be aware of all surroundings, especially if you have a heavy machine moving around your warehouse like a forklift, a reach, or even a pallet jack. The speaker I use are loud, but not louder than a lift machine; that siren beats out most sounds. All that leads me to my choice of using speakers to play music: they are connected to my work computer and I can easily skip a song directly on the computer or do it through my phone on apps like Spotify. It allows me to easily hear music from anywhere in my area, making it easy to have good music playing throughout the day.
