The globally renowned Sennheiser HD650 headphones (Senneheiser Consumer is now EPOS), are very popular in the audiophile community and are part of the legendary HD600 series. It's warm and punchy, yet crisp frequency response continues to dominate the market after nearly 20 years. The biggest design quirk of the HD650 is the fact that it has an extremely unforgiving clamp force. This, combined with the earpads hardening over time, may create an uncomfortable listening experience. We decided to design replacement earpads for the Sennheiser HD600 series that enable the user to experience the greatness of the headphones with enhanced comfort. With our high-density memory foam and an increase in the depth of the ear pad, you will notice an increase in soundstage and a more comfortable clamp around your ears. We offer a range of replacement earpads within our Elite and Choice line of earpads — including our Choice Leather and Suede earpads, as well as our Elite Sheepskin, Fenestrated Sheepskin, Velour, and Hybrid ear pads. In this post, we are going to go over the frequency response measurements of our replacement earpads with the EPOS Sennheiser HD650 headphones, and we will compare them to the stock earpads. This will give you a better idea of how our earpads may sound with the HD650 headphones and which earpad material may be best suited for you.
First in the Elite Series line-up is the Elite Sheepskin earpads. According to our measurements, there is a slightly lower bass content at around 1-2 dB. You may also notice dips in the mid and higher ranges. The dip in the mids may have a slight reduction in the vocals and the decrease in the highs will attenuate the peak to be less sharp. Our Elite Sheepskin earpads are leather earpads derived from real sheepskin. When you take this soft and supple material and wrap it in our dense, slow-rebounding memory foam, you will notice an increase in isolation, comfort, and soundstage. Note that all of our Elite and Choice earpads contain our high-density, slow-rebounding memory foam, which means you will achieve better isolation and a more relaxed clamp with the earpads around your ear, even if you wear glasses.

Our Elite Fenestrated Sheepskin is one of the more popular styles of earpads we have in our collection. It’s made of the same material as our sheepskin earpads, however, we’ve included small perforations around the earpad. We did this in order to increase the cooling effect of the earpads and to help give the headphones a cleaner sound stage by reducing reflections of the direct sound before entering the ear. In the graph, you can see that it measures close to our other Elite earpads. You can see that there is a smoother bass response with a dip that starts in the mids and ends in the highs. If you are looking for a little more of a punch in the low end, without being overbearing, these are the earpads for you.

Up next, we have our Elite Velour replacement earpads. In the graph, you can see that there is a smoother bass with more linear movement along the graph compared to the stock earpads, which contributes to a rounder low-end. Similar to our Elite Sheepskin earpads, there is a dip in the mid and high ranges. The mid-range, however, is more reduced. The high range has a slight adjustment at the peak headed down by a few dB. By designing the earpads to have a tighter velour, the earpads can react more like traditional leather in order to retain the bass frequencies and the isolation, unlike most velour earpads. This also helps to retain the maximum comfort and coolness of the velour material, meaning these earpads will feel more airy and open.
