We’ll spend hundreds, sometimes thousands, on high-end drivers, DACs, and amps. We obsess over frequency response graphs and bitrates. However, there’s a humble, squishy component sitting right against your head that has more influence over your music than almost any cable upgrade ever could: the earpad.
Think of earpads as more than just cushions; they are the acoustic seal and tuning chamber for your headphones. Changing your pads is easily the simplest "mod" you can do without ever touching a circuit board.
1. Leather
Since leather is non-porous, it creates a tight acoustic seal against your skull. This traps the air between the driver and your ear, which is the secret sauce for impactful bass. Because that air has nowhere to go, low-end frequencies stay pressurized, giving you that "thump" you can actually feel.
Leather reflects high frequencies rather than absorbing them. This can make some headphones sound more "intimate" or even a bit aggressive but they don’t breathe, so expect some ear sweat during long sessions.
2. Velour
Velour is a staple in pro studios, such as the classic Beyerdynamic DT series. Unlike leather, velour is porous and lets air leak through the fabric. This usually means the bass response takes a slight hit in "slam," but the tradeoff is worth it for many: the soundstage opens up. The music feels less like it’s trapped inside your head and more like it’s filling a room. Highs are also smoothed out, making them way less piercing.
3. Hybrid Pads
These usually feature a leather outer ring to maintain that bass seal, but use velour or perforated material on the face that touches your skin. These are designed to keep the low-end extension of leather while taming the heat and reverb inside the cup. You usually end up with a very balanced, "reference" sound that works well across almost any genre.
4. Suede
Suede is the warm blanket of the audio world. It’s denser than velour but more porous than leather, acting as a massive acoustic absorber. Suede pads soak up harsh treble peaks, making "bright" headphones much more tolerable. If you’re into vocal-heavy tracks or jazz and want a lush, mid-range focused sound, this is the way to go.
