Good ol’ Call of Duty(CoD). A staple of my childhood, the CoD arcade shooter formula roped me back in with the latest game modes. I found my zen in the DMZ playlist, this shooter looter game enhances my senses and pumps adrenaline through my fingers because of the intense situations. Escaping with a cache of loot requires acute attention, sifting through who is an AI and who is a real player. This requires laser focus and peripherals tuned to the user's needs. One of the components of these hectic game modes is sound. Specifically directional information and distance in sound. Access to many headphones allows me to utilize the best sound signature for my gaming needs. Being able to locate an enemy first because I have the edge in equipment can put enemies on tilt. Enemy voice chat is automatically turned on and hearing the disappointment of others adds to the excitement of having the jump on someone.
The headphones that I have been using lately are the Dekoni Cobalt, specifically with the velour ear pads. Tuned with a more significant depth, the velour ear pads create a larger space enhancing the acoustics inside of the ear cup. The engineers of these games spend time developing the sound engine to include directional information, which in turn allows those with better headphones to have an edge over the competition. The Dekoni Cobalt utilizes this fact and has made it much easier to enjoy my daily gaming grind. I currently use the Dekoni Cobalt because the ear cup size is quite cavernous. As the designer of the ear pads, I personally choose larger ear pads so my ears can sit comfortably inside the pad. The large and thick memory foam earpads allow for a larger acoustic space for better stereo imaging and soundstage. The ear pad should be thought of as the room you are listening in, it's a personal experience and with the Cobalt I personally enjoy being able to listen to well-mixed music. Tracks that always amaze me on the Cobalt include Doja Cat - Kiss Me More and Queens of the Stone Age - Song for the Dead.
If there was a question about what microphone I use at my desk, I am currently using a CAD E300. It's attached to a boom arm so I can choose whichever headphone fits my mood for the day, no need to have a microphone attached to it. With professional microphones it will require an audio interface. These devices plug in via the USB ports on a computer for quick interfacing with professional audio equipment. Back to gaming, I don’t really think I will be switching my gaming setup soon. The Cobalt gives me the right sound signature to remove the bass extension, opening up the other parts of the frequency spectrum to give me game sound information. The large ear cups offer great comfort so I can wear the Cobalt for an extremely long time. The imaging and soundstage give me another layer of directional information. I have honestly seen an improvement in my gameplay while wearing the Cobalt and I expect it to be like that for the next few years. As of current the Dekoni Cobalt is still being manufactured. This prototype is a final version of the headphone. The Dekoni Cobalt will be available starting March 2023 for order at DekoniAudio.com
