The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x is a well-rounded, versatile pair of headphones perfect for the recording musician, sound tech, video editor, music producer, or even the typical music enthusiast. Having been on the market for more than a decade, we still recognize its massive popularity and praise. With this in mind, we wanted to offer fans of these headphones more options, whether it's a tweak in the sound signature or overall comfort. When it comes to comfort, our premium, high-density, slow rebounding memory foam offers an extra layer of comfort that conforms to the shape of your head. We also increased the depth of the earpads to create a little bit more comfort for those who may want more room or have larger ears. We include our luxurious outer material options for enhanced comfort, including our famous Elite Sheepskin, Elite Velour, Choice Leather, Choice Suede, Choice Hybrid, and Premium Protein Leather. We carefully designed our M50X replacement earpads so that the earpads mount just as securely as the stock earpads. However, our earpads not only fit the the M50X model of headphones, but many more. Here is a chart showing the verified list of headphones our M50X replacement earpads fit:

To start off, we have our natural and supple Elite Sheepskin earpads that exceed in offering a soft and breathable pair of replacement earpads. In the measurement graph, you can see a similar frequency response curve shape as the stock earpads. However, the sub-bass “rumble” response gently rolls off more than before. These earpads are fantastic for anyone who chooses the M50X for tight bass and an emphasis on the midrange and treble. This person also prefers the feel of sleek leather, as well as the gentle push of thicker earpads with our high-density memory foam.

Our velvety and breathable Elite Velour earpads have a much higher thread count and tighter weave than the typical velour earpads currently on the market. As you can see in the graph, the performance of the stock earpad is similar to our velour earpad with a tighter seal, with a little more quantity of low-midrange and sub-bass. If you are looking for replacement earpads with a soft velour material that offers a tighter seal and more breathability than the stock pads, the Elite Velour replacement earpads are for you.

Our Choice Leather earpads are made with synthetic leather, offering an animal-free option. According to the measurement graph, you will hear a steeper dip in the midrange compared to the stock earpads. Our earpads give a stronger emphasis to the bass if you prefer more power in the lower frequencies. Our Choice Leather earpads also smooth out the upper midrange spike centered around 4.5 kHz. At 4.5kHz, spikes are often correlated with sibilance, so this could be a great solution for taming more edgy harmonicas and violins.

Our Choice Suede earpads, our softest earpad textile, have a similar sound to the Choice Leather earpads, simply because they are both made up of synthetic materials that give a tighter seal. You’ll notice in the graph, the sound has a smooth volume transition between sub-bass and midrange with no spike. The stock dip at 6.5 kHz has shifted down to 5.5 kHz, so the sound may seem more romanticized.

Our Choice Hybrid earpads have Choice Leather on the exterior, Choice Suede on the face which touches your ears, and Choice Leather with fenestration on the interior. These earpads measure the closest to the Elite Velour earpads. It is shaped similarly to Audio Technica’s stock earpads, with more sub-bass and low mids compared to the other earpads. There is no more 4.5 kHz spike and there is a bit more upper-midrange energy and “air” in the highest ranges of our hearing, which increases soundstage and helps with the positional accuracy of certain instruments in your music.

Lastly, we have our Platinum Protein Leather replacement earpads. These earpads have slightly lighter sub-bass and a more linear progression from bass to mids to treble. You can potentially notice the upper mids and treble with a little less energy compared to the stock earpads. The Premium Protein Leather earpads are perfect if you feel that the midrange and treble of the stock earpads are too over-bearing or the treble. Our Protein Leather is also more enhanced than the pleather, as the eggshell membrane protein results in a more supple, moisturized, and soft material.
