Audeze has proven that they are dedicated to delivering the highest quality listening experience with its LCD flagship series headphones. Undeniably, these headphones pack a punch in both sound and visual appearance. With that said, we’ve continued to display our dedication to upgrading even the most high-quality headphones in the market with our replacement earpads. The LCD headphones are an audiophile classic, and we’ve designed an array of replacement earpads utilizing our renowned materials that will be sure to deliver an upgraded listening experience.
Available for a variety of Audeze LCD headphones, we have our Elite Sheepskin, Elite Fenestrated Sheepskin, Elite Velour, Elite Hybrid, Choice Leather, and Choice Suede replacement earpads. Take a look at our Dekoni Verified Fit chart to see exactly which LCD headphones are compatible with our replacement earpads. While we strive to enhance the earpad’s quality of comfort, we also keep in mind how our replacement earpads may cause tweaks in the sound signature. During the design process, we also strive to tune the earpads in a way that will improve the quality of sound rather than decrease it.
While in many cases we try to create at least one variant that remains very close to stock sound, we also explore other sound signatures with our other materials, allowing everyone to find a tuning that they love. So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at how our Elite and Choice replacement earpads compare to the stock earpad’s sound signature of the classic Audeze LCD-2.
Starting things off with our supple, authentic sheepskin earpads, you will notice that these pads maintain a relatively similar sound signature with a few minor tweaks. The low-end shares a similar frequency response with our sheepskin earpads, delivering a smoother transition into the mid-range. In the mid-range at around 1 kHz to 5 kHz, you’ll notice our sheepskin earpads remove a dip and maintain a strong presence in this range with an increase of roughly 5 dB. This boost will create more detail and emphasis on your music's mid-range instruments and vocals. Lastly, in the high range, we recorded a very similar frequency response with some very subtle boosts and dips that aren’t as audible. Although, you will most likely be unable to hear/notice any difference in this range.

Next, we have our Elite Fenestrated Sheepskin. While the Elite Fenestrated Sheepskin earpads utilize the same authentic sheepskin material as our Elite Sheepskin earpads, they also come with tiny perforations around the exterior and interior of the pad. The perforations were designed to reduce the amount of heat stored in the earpad during long listening sessions and to take away some reflected sound by not having a completely closed surface. Because of the Elite Fenestrated Sheepskin’s more airy and breathable design, we’re going to see a greater emphasis on the higher frequency range. In the graph, you will notice a greater transition in terms of dB from the mids into the highs with our fenestrated sheepskin pads. And there is also a slight 2 dB decrease in the mid-range. As for the low ends, you will notice a nearly identical response.

Our supple, high thread count, Elite velour replacement earpads are breathable and soft to the touch. And as you can see, they are able to retain the original sound signature of the low end — in fact, it traces very similarly to our Fenestrated Sheepskin earpads with just a little bit less energy in the lower midrange. The highs maintain the punch of the stock earpads with some dips and increase in the higher, more inaudible ranges. When considering the effect other velour pads cause on the low and high ends — such as decreasing the pitch quantity — our Elite Velour earpads can be a great substitute for those looking to increase comfort while also maintaining a similar sound signature to the stock earpads.

Last, in the Elite line-up, we have our Elite Hybrid replacement earpads. These earpads utilize materials from all the previously mentioned Elite earpads. Our hybrid pads rock a sheepskin exterior, a fenestrated sheepskin interior, and a velour face that hugs your head. With the combined material of all our Elite earpads, our hybrid earpads maintain a similar level in the low ends — starting off slightly lower and eventually slightly surpassing the original stock pads. Once we dip into the mid-range, our hybrid pads show a slight decrease in the low midrange with an increase in the high-mids leading into the higher frequencies. The hybrid pads also create a smaller contrast between the 4 kHz and 6 kHz range in terms of the valleys and peaks compared to the stock pads. Overall, there is a very similar frequency curve shape as the stock pads with a slight boost in the higher frequency range.

Moving on to our Choice material, we have our Choice Leather replacement earpads. Despite the initial response in the low ends, the Choice Leather earpads replicate a very similar shape to the Elite Sheepskin pads. The Choice Leather pads have a more direct increase in the 10-50 Hz range and then smooth out a bit into a similar low-end response to the stock pads. They continue to maintain a similar response as they transition into the mid-range with the Choice Leather pads showing a little more emphasis at around the 1 to 5 kHz range. In the high-frequency range, the Choice Leather pads maintain a similar pattern to that of the stock pads with a minor dip at the 9 kHz range.

Last but not least, we have our Choice Suede replacement earpads. Despite its velvety, soft outer material, it’s still able to produce a similar sound signature to that of the Choice Leather pads. The only noticeable difference between Choice Leather and Suede is that the Choice Leather earpads have a larger initial dip in the 10-50 Hz range. Besides the initial dip in the low-frequency range, the Choice Suede earpads maintain a similar bass response with an increase in mid-range presence. There’s also a more gradual and present transition into the highs with a dip at around 8-10 kHz, creating less of a peak in this higher frequency range. The decrease from the original stock pad peak can allow for a more relaxed listening experience. However, as we reach the higher, more inaudible kHz range — specifically at around 20 kHz, we notice an increase in the presence. Again, you will likely not be able to hear this difference.

As everyone probably knows, sound is subjective. The subjective factor that goes into a headphone listening experience is what matters most and we value that. That’s why we strive to bring about as many options for headphone listeners in terms of comfort and sound signature as possible. When adding modding into the picture, the opportunities for achieving a more personalized and perfect listening experience are unparalleled. With that being said, if any of the above replacement earpads — such as our Elite Sheepskin, Elite Fenestrated Sheepskin, Elite Velour, Elite Hybrid, Choice Leather, and Choice Suede — interest you, be sure to check them out here.
